Representative firm analysis and the character of competition: glimpses from the Great Depression

Article Abstract:

The history of business enterprises during the previous decades, particularly in the Great Depression era, may be analyzed efficiently by evaluating conventional economist data in the context of archival and related contemporary sources. Aside from the advantages of source availability and less work requirement, the approach enables researchers to derive various microeconomics and empirical research programs. It further offers an extensive analysis on competitive dynamics and prevailing secular changes during the period mentioned.

Measuring prices and quantities of treatment for depression

Article Abstract:

A number of alternative treatments for depressive behavior and other related mental disorders were developed between 1991 and 1995, as revealed by an analysis conducted on the productivity of the health sector. Through the use of a specially designed price index, a marked shift from psychotherapy intensive care to low-cost drugs and less-psycjotherapoy was noted. The period was further marked with an increased use of SSRI drugs.

Engaging students in quantitative analysis with short case examples from the academic and popular press

Article Abstract:

Engaging students individually and with group work on computers may allow economics teachers to teach quantitative analysis more effectively. Teaching the subject requires small classes that may be held in a computer laboratory and teachers may use the Internet to download timely and relevant data for discussion. Internet use may minimize lost time making visits to public libraries and other sources.
