Risk and saving the Northern Nigeria

Article Abstract:

It was hypothesized that Northern Nigerian households dissave when faced with adverse shocks to their income. This assumption was tested using a set of data that includes household level information on the receipt of random production shocks over a one-year agricultural period. Results showed that there was a large and statistically significant asset drawdown upon learning of an adverse shock and save more when presented a positive shock.

Two modest case studies in specific instances of overlap between the interests and research efforts of economist and political scientist are presented.
