Saving, investment and the current account

Article Abstract:

It is possible to amend some traditional views on the links between the current account and the terms of trade, the exchange rate and fiscal policy by modeling national saving and investment trends in a contemporary intertemporal optimization framework. This new structure can also give reasons for the close empirical links between national saving and investment rates. Focusing on saving and investment behaviour gives more prominence to the macroeconomic nature of the current account, but this approach is not suitable for all circumstances.

Involuntary unemployment and environmental policy: the double dividend hypothesis

Article Abstract:

A mathematical model which tests the effects of environmental policy on unemployment shows that environmental taxes may be employed to reduce unemployment and increase the equity of the tax system. The model explores the double dividend hypothesis of environmental regulation in an economic model which assumes high employment in the informal sector and firms set the wage level. Benefits are derived by taxing emissions, and savings in emissions taxes are cycled back as income tax reductions.

Sustainability and technical progress

Article Abstract:

A mathematical model is developed to link sustainability, Green Net National Production and technological progress. The model is shown to be sensitive to the 'Solow residual', the component of the model which predicts the effects of technological change on sustainability. This sensitivity suggests that forecasting for sustainability can be better effected by technological progress in conserving environmental assets.
