Setting market access priorities: the use of super 301 in US trade with Japan

Article Abstract:

An examination of the Bush Administration's market access priority selection to Japan is presented. Issues studied includes both selected and rejected candidate practices by the administration. Although executive officials have to be receptive to preferences by the industry and Congress, they still have an area of autonomy from these groups to pursue strategic trade policies. In general, US trade policy must still improve in its unilateral, bilateral and multilateral initiatives.

Behind the US/Japan trade conflict

Article Abstract:

Savings behavior differences between the US and Japan account for their current account disparity. The disparity is partially the result of Japan's improper international coordination of macroeconomic policies. Trade conflict between the two countries has been associated primarily with the closed Japanese economy, which is conditioned by government regulation and intervention, private behavior in terms of environmental adaptation and Japanese public perception.
