The Collapse of West German Private bank Schroder, Munchmeyer, Hengst (SMH) has caused the government to take a close look at the banking industry. Amendments to the banking law are proposed. Details of the problem are given.

West German banking laws have kept the British banking presence down there. Branches must be run by qualified, recognized, German-speaking bankers. Lloyds and Midland Bank are moving into the market through acquisition.

West Germany private bank Schroder, Munchmeyer, Hengst came very near collapse in November 1983. A bail out was arranged with twenty commercial banks. The problem was in the industrial business area.
