Monthly report-September 1999

Article Abstract:

A survey of 579 small business owners conducted in Aug 1999 by the NFIB reveals that the Small Business Optimism Index remained virtually unchanged from Jul 1999. Of the 10 components monitored, four posted gains, three registered declines and three were unchanged. Key survey findings were that a net 18% of firms planned to increase employment, that 29% reported higher labor compensation and that the majority of firms reported having hard-to-fill job openings. Another important finding was that capital spending plans were unchanged at 31% of all firms.

Small business optimism

Article Abstract:

A survey of small business owners was conducted to determine issues that affect owners and their future plans. Members of the National Federation of Independent Businesses were used as respondents. Results show that small firms have problems in recruiting qualified employees. Modest increases in wages are expected and the possibilities for expansion are minimal. Other information includes sales, earnings, prices, employment, credit conditions, inventories and capital outlays.

Small business optimism

Article Abstract:

A survey of small business owners in Apr. 1995 shows a generally modest optimism in light of the slowing down of economic growth. Nevertheless, small business firms plan to hire more personnel and increase capital expenditures. Additional inventories, however, do not constitute a priority. Because of cash flow problems, many firms have increased their borrowing activity. A majority of firms favor Congress' economic policies.
