Social institutions and human cognition: thinking about old questions in new ways

Article Abstract:

There is a complex relationship between social institutions, cognition and rationality, and there are some basic causal relationships between the three. Institutions affect cognition and society, and in turn are affected by rational decision-making. Rational decision-making is in turn affected by cognition. We are better able to understand social change if we examine these relationships between institutions and cognition, which means both using new methods and reinterpreting existing theories.

The bases of cooperation: social norms and the rule of law

Article Abstract:

Social norms form an integral part of society's structure and, together with legislation, act as a guide to the community. Social norms, in contrast to laws, represent an informal method of communication. Social order and accepted norms are fundamental to the facilitation of cooperation, without which laws would be ineffective. The role of 'new institutionalism' within society should be studied further.
