Social security and the real economy: an inquiry into some neglected issues

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the interrelationship between social security and the real economy reveals that estimated effects of pensions across countries are significant and that these can, in turn affect other social factors. The study points out that other social factors that may be affected by social security include divorce rates, marriage rates, fertility and productivity with social security conversion into a fully funded privately managed system a possible way of avoiding disincentives.

Privatizing social security at home and abroad

Article Abstract:

The potentials of privatization as a solution to the pay-as-you-go approach of Social Security financing are examined by using net tax burdens data from five Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries. Moreover, a 'personal security system' approach to privatization is developed. This method would enhance tax-benefit linkages, remove subsidies for single-earner couples, improve survivor protection and ensure the long-term financing of Social Security.

Social security: privatization and progressivity

Article Abstract:

An analysis of privatization and progressivity of the social security system reveals that privatization offers substantial long-run economic gains with progressivity being achieved by matching worker contributions. Privatization gains are not immediate nor free with other transition generations facing higher fiscal burdens and slower rates depending on how the transition is financed.
