Standards and trade performance: the UK experience

Article Abstract:

The impact of standards on trade performance in the UK is examined. The standards included in the study are those developed and introduced by national standards bodies, including the British Standards Institution. Results show that UK strength in standards enriches the British trade balance. Moreover, the findings oppose the two commonly held assumptions that standards activity in one country is nullified by competing standards in another, and that international standards are more effective than national standards in offering a trade advantage.

The road less travelled: institutional aspects of data and their influence on empirical estimates with an application to tests of forward rate unbiasedness

Article Abstract:

Empirical calculations may be affected by the difference between data used in empirical studies and those envisioned theoretically. The direction of future research may well be altered due to such a possibility. Studies of forward rate unbiasedness are examined to show that the absence of explanation on the mechanics of foreign exchange market speculation and the laws governing spot and forward rate contracts may result in sampling of data inconsistent with theory.

Identifying asymmetric competitor networks from characteristics data: application to the spreadsheet software market

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine an alternative solution for the problem of inconsistencies between analytical measures and empirical results for questioning producers in a competitive market. The study focuses on a method which identifies competitor networks in the spreadsheet software market. Results show that the application of characteristics data on different products helps in identifying asymmetric competitor networks.
