Stockings and tights

Article Abstract:

UK hosiery sales have fallen by 8% since 1997, mainly due to the increasing popularity of trousers as fashion clothing. The trend is expected to result in a continuing decline in demand for stockings and tights and a growth for knee-highs and socks. The UK stockings and tights market was valued at 390 million pounds sterling in 1999 and is expected to fall to 389 million pounds sterling in 2000, with a slight rise to 394 million pounds sterling, at current prices, by 2004.

Stockings and tights

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom market for stockings and tights is expected to grow 7% by real value during 1994-98, following an 11% decline to 390 million pounds sterling in 1994 over 1993. The market fell 28% by volume during 1989-94, mainly due to the rise in sales of opaque tights. Opaques accounted for 21% of the market by value in 1994. Sales of stockings fell 5% by volume during 1990-94. Eighty two percent of hosiery sales were accounted for by tights in 1994, with sheer plain hosiery accounting for 69% of sales by value in 1994. The market is analysed.

Stockings and tights

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom stocking and tights industry is experiencing a revival as demonstrated by predicted sales in 1996 showing an increase of 15 million pairs over sales in 1995. The reduction in purchasing had been attributed to tights and stockings being made to last longer and the general state of the economy. During 1991 to 1996 sales of traditional stockings have been reduced by 43% whilst the newer style knee high stockings have increased by 53%. Choice in the hosiery market is very wide which can cause loss of custom for the retailer who is unable to stock every style.
