Student enrollment and faculty renewal: the response of a tenure-based university system to demographic and budgetary shocks

Article Abstract:

Demographic and budgetary shocks tend to affect the ability of universities or state-supported university systems to maintain a competitive faculty through hiring young and talented faculty members. The sensitivity to the shocks may be dependent on several factors, such as the method used by a university in getting public funds and specific behavioral parameters. Regulations that restrict the university's ability to adjust fees can also significantly affect its capacity to hire young faculty.

Privatizing the intellectual commons: universities and the commercialization of biotechnology

Article Abstract:

Analysis of university efforts to privatize university biotechnology research reveals that attempts have been severely hampered by internal and external parties advocating that the university conform with its commitment to 'intellectual commons'. The study reveals that social-contractual orientation and organizational standards affect the shape and outcome of property rights negotiations and that these could bring rise to new organizational forms.
