Sweden's relative economic performance: lagging behind or staying on top?

Article Abstract:

Sweden's economic growth rate has been slower compared to other rich countries since the 1970s. A notable consequence of this is the drop of the relative income in Sweden from third or fourth position in 1970 to just 17th place in 1993 among OECD countries. In spite of this data, Walter Korpi continues to assert that economists claiming that Sweden has been lagging behind have used careless analyses to come to such a conclusion. He instead argues that growth in Sweden has been at par with other comparable countries.

Beer and the tie: did divestiture of brewer-owned public houses lead to higher beer prices?

Article Abstract:

The 1989 recommendation of the United Kingdom Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC), which asked brewers to divest their public houses, has failed to lower retail prices of beer. An econometric analysis of the recommendation's transition period revealed that divestiture of public houses has lead to an increased in retail prices of beer. On the other hand, the recommendation has resulted to an increase in the number of foreign lagers in the market leading to a significant expansion in consumer choice.

Relative prices in the UK personal sector money demand function

Article Abstract:

Varian's nonparametric technique is employed to find out if different subgroupings of monetary assets are weakly separable in a completely specified utility function and in the consumer's utility function. Findings of this study strongly prove that traditional money demand studies may be misinformed in ignoring the role of relative prices. This misspecification could be partially credited for the general money demand instability seen in official monetary aggregates in the UK since the 1970s.
