Sweet biscuits

Article Abstract:

The UK sweet biscuit market has grown in value by 23% between 1992 and 1996 to reach nearly 1.5 billion pounds sterling in 1996. Volume sales increased by 8%, and the market buoyancy looks set to continue. Both own label and brands are strong, with manufacturers using brand extension to capitalize on brand strength. Manufacturers are responding to two strong elements in the market by producing biscuits in which the consumer can indulge themselves, and by producing low-fat ranges. Advertising expenditure decreased, but widely-used promotional activities include sampling and price promotions.

Sweet biscuits

The UK sweet biscuit market is forecast to increase in value terms from 1,541 million pounds sterling in 1999 to 1,660 million pounds sterling by 2003. The market will be affected by the decline in hot drink consumption which is the traditional accompaniment with sweet biscuits. The industry must position sweet biscuits as an alternative to chocolate bars or introduce a health factor by marketing natural ingredients and benefits.
