Tarnished Hopes

Article Abstract:

South Africa economists are forecasting continued recession into 1985. The reason for the lingering economic recession is the fall in the price of gold. Gold contributes to half of the countries export earnings. A reflationary fiscal policy to fight recession cannot be employed. Government spending is too high, and taxes must be raised.

Hong Kong Hopes This Rat Will Run and Run

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong stock market has responded positively to optimism over the colony's future. Positive factors include falling interest rates, recovery in the property market, investment by China, rising exports and recovery in the domestic economy. Graphs are given.

Article Abstract:

The European Economic Community (EEC) budget will be an issue at the December 1983 meetings. The French have proposed a series of limitations on spending. Other concerns include national contributions, dairy subsidies, enlargement, and community resources.
