Technology strategy, governance structure and interdivisional coordination

Article Abstract:

Different organizational forms are compared in terms of their ability to solve coordination problems resulting from the technological interdependence between the various units of the company. The study contrasts multidivisional firms General Motors (GM) and IBM. Results show that IBM's attempts at interdivisional coordination were successful, while GM's were not. It is suggested that the centralized governance structure, supplemented by lower-powered incentives, promote interdivisional coordination.
