Testing for efficient contracts in unionized labour markets

Article Abstract:

Empirical tests designed to distinguish between the labor-demand and efficient contract models of wage and employment determination in unionized labor markets were described. An alternative non-tested approach that varies the set of instrumental variables across both models was proposed to compensate for the restrictive nature of nested tests. This approach tests whether outcomes are efficient and allows the utility function to be the same for the two models. It also focuses on the power of labor unions to negotiate over employment.
