Thai, Mexican and emerging ethnic foods

Article Abstract:

The UK emerging ethnic food market is forecast to increase from 185 million pounds sterling in 1999 to 259 million pounds sterling by 2003. The strongest growth sector is expected to be Mexican food, with the market forecast to grow from 94 million pounds sterling in 1999 to 132 million pounds sterling in 2003. Thai food has increased in popularity within the upper social groups of the UK, with sales increasing from 20 million pounds sterling in 1994 to 45 million pounds sterling by 1999.

Article Abstract:

The UK emerging ethnic food market was valued at 70.9 million pounds sterling in 1997 and is expected to increase in value to 110.1 million pounds sterling by 2002. Thai food accounts for 48% of the UK market in 1997 at 34 million pounds sterling. The Japanese food market accounts for 5% at 4 million pounds sterling in 1997. The popularity of exotic foreign holidays and an increase in the numbers of vegetarians has helped the emerging ethnic food market to grow.
