The Confusion that Comes with Withdrawal Symptoms

Article Abstract:

United States policy in Lebanon has taken a turn, but confusion remains regarding the ultimate goals. The decision to fire guns from United States Navy warships off Lebanon's coast was a compromise which satisfied neither the administration, Congress or the allies. The time table for the marines' withdrawal is expected imminently. Consultations are taking place between members of the multinational force. Congressional pressure for an immediate withdrawal appears strong. Israel opposes the United States pullout. King Hussein and President Mubarak have visited Washington. Both men presented their positions on the Middle Eastern conflict to Ronald Reagan. Both fear the growing power of Syria.

Tactical Retreats

Article Abstract:

It appears the Reagan Administration will not do battle with the press over the handling of information on the invasion of Grenada last October. The Pentagon admits its mistake in keeping the press uninformed about the operation for the first two days. A Pentagon commission has made recommendations on press coverage of military operations. Reagan has also suspended use of lie-detector tests on government officials and a censorship provision which were parts of his national security orders.
