The World Trade Organisation: institution-building in the multilateral trade system

Article Abstract:

The World Trade Organization (WTO) puts more focus on contractual rules than on collective action, and it depends on the countries engaging in the rules-based trade system to impose the rules more on the basis of individual initiative. Thus, the WTO has been considered a contract organization. It was organized on the basis of General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) customary practice. Such practice helped regularize commercial relations between GATT Contracting Parties and further extended the cooperation that inspired the GATT contract.

Offshore assembly and the Dominican Republic

Article Abstract:

Dominican Republic's high degree of dependence on US in terms of offshore assembly operations makes the country's economy susceptible to external shocks. Offshore assembly operations in Dominican Republic are characterized by too much reliance on US offshore assembly provision, attributing 20 to 30% of the country's total value operation. It centers mostly in the apparel industry and is also almost completely dependent on US for its export market.

The economic desirability of Middle-Eastern monetary cooperation

Article Abstract:

Benefits resulting from the establishment of monetary cooperation among Middle-Eastern countries remains unclear due to the nature of their trade and economic structures. Deterioration of intra group exchange rate management and transaction costs will most likely result since majority of Middle Eastern countries' trading partners are located outside the region. Their trading volumes are also not adequate and inflation rates are almost alike.
