This article discusses political and socioeconomic situation in Russia since the economic crisis in 1998 and its impact on the role of the state. Issues addressed include statehood and federalism as outlined in the Constitution of 1993 and the Federative Treaty of 1992, the rights of jurisdiction of the Russian Federation and the bilateral treaty process between the state and the regions.
