The effect of Medicaid expansions on public insurance, private insurance, and redistribution

Article Abstract:

The expansion of Medicaid coverage to include pregnant women and young children in high income families is examined and its effects on private and public insurance and redistribution are studied. Statistical analysis show the need to finance insurance purchases of the low-income bracket to minimize crowding out. Furthermore, Medicaid has a minimal effect on insurance choices compared to other distribution systems.

The geography of Medicare

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the source of regional differences in Medicare spending and the influence of different policies on regional variation. Three theories were proposed to explain the regional differences in medical costs. These include illness differences, differential demand for medical care conditional on illness, and variations in the structure of medical-care markets. Results indicated that differences in the health status of the elderly population accounts for a significant portion of the geographic variation in Medicare spending.
