The effects of trade unions on the distribution of earnings: a sample selectivity approach

Article Abstract:

The union wage differentials as a result of trade union monopoly is investigated at the micro level. Data was obtained from the ESRC program Changing Pattern of Economic and Social Life in Britain which covered six local labor markets. Trade unions are found to affect distribution of earnings by a creating a wage differential between union and non-union employees and influence the variance of earnings which depended on the characteristics of the union and non-union sectors.

What a difference a wife makes: the effect of women's hours of work on husbands' hourly earnings

Article Abstract:

The employment of women significantly affects the hourly wage rates of their husbands. An analysis of data from the UK's General Household Survey reveals that men in managerial and other manual occupations whose wives are working have lower hourly earnings than their single-earning counterparts. Specifically, wives who work 40 hours a week cause an estimated 15% reduction in their husbands' hourly wages.
