The efficiency impact of the Chinese industrial reforms in the 1980's

Article Abstract:

A study employing stochastic frontier production function is made to determine the impact of partial and gradual reforms implemented in the Chinese state-owned manufacturing sector in the 1980s. The study tried to determine the impact of these partial and gradual reforms to the efficiency level of seven manufacturing industries. Studies show that there is a significant improvement in the level of technical efficiency but not in industry-wide productivity. Several factors such as location, different forms of administration, and operational scale influenced the otherwise systematic implementation of reforms. The key factor then to China's industrial reform's success is gradualism.

Corporate farm performance in Russia, 1991-1995: an efficiency analysis

Article Abstract:

An analysis of corporate farm efficiency in Russia revealed that the initial conditions are significant in determining the performance, which in this case, proves consistent with the hypothesis of passive restructuring. Cross-sectional results indicate that oblasts have increasing variance in efficiency performance from year to year. Also, oblasts that aim to be self-sufficient demonstrate a high correlation between soft budget indicators and inefficiency.

How successful were China's state sector reforms?

Article Abstract:

A study of the impact of the various reform measures on the productivity of China's state enterprises has found that some policies improved productivity while the size of the reform effects on output and total factor productivity growth were minimal. For instance, productivity improvements were observed following reductions in the proportion of planned output and the implementation of the contract system.
