The evolution and performance of biotechnology regional systems of innovation

Article Abstract:

The emergence of biotechnology regions that develop as complex systems of innovation is discussed. Biotechnology regions attract scientists from research universities, followed by entry of venture capitalists and the transfer or purchase of knowledge from universities. An analysis of the performance of the companies located in such regional agglomerates is presented. 90 Canada based publicly quoted biotechnology companies were examined for assessing the relevant effects of biotechnology regions.

Rational drug design, the knowledge value chain and bioscience megacentres

Article Abstract:

The changing trends in healthcare sector are discussed. Drug research was formerly based on pure chemistry but is now heavily into biologics. Consequently, the shift in knowledge value chain from universities to dedicated biotechnology firms and involvement of financiers and marketers is discussed. The effects of these trends on regional innovations and science policies are also discussed.
