The factors determining the profitability of international airlines: some econometric results

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine factors which determine the profitability of international airlines. The study focuses on the US domestic airline industry whose deregulation and success interest economists. Under unregulated conditions, market contestability, multiple output nature of costs, network structure and airport presence contribute to airline profitability. Results show that high passenger load factors, low capacity related costs, younger and more efficient fleets and freight supplements enhance profitability of airlines under the process of deregularization.
