The future of Lome: Europe's role in African growth

Article Abstract:

Improvement of the Lome Treaty needs to be undertaken by the European Union as well as their African counterparts in order to address the issue of economic growth properly. A menu approach is being considered in order to pattern the Lome Treaty in accordance with the varying needs and preferences of African countries. Under this approach, the European Union and the former European colonies would coordinate regarding a variety of options, which is composed of benefits and obligations. Some of the options, which would be defined by the Lome Treaty, would include performance-based aid, reciprocal trade agreements and membership in supra-national institutions.

Trade policy and regional integration: implications for the relations between Europe and Africa

Article Abstract:

International trade policy in African nations cannot satisfactorily promote regional economic integration based on collusion because of the similarity in the kind of produce in each country. It is suggested that a unilateral, instead of a regional, trade policy should be pursued so as to reap the benefits of trade with developed countries such as those located in Europe. This policy should pivot around the removal of import controls and other trade liberalization measures.
