The future of the readymade clothing industry of Bangladesh in the post-Uruguay Round world

Article Abstract:

The continuing success of the readymade clothing industry of Bangladesh after the expiration of the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing by 2005 will depend on how the nation can efficiently position itself in the new environment. This will entail the establishment of such measures as improved product quality and design, cost-effective backward linkages, a significant diversification in products and markets and a marked improvement in labor productivity.

AGOA and Apparel: Who Captures the Tariff Rent in the Presence of Preferential Market Access?

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented of the price increases received by apparel industry exporters benefiting from preferences contained in the African Growth and Opportunity Act. Findings show that only one-third of the resulting tariff preference rent is received by exporters, and that smaller rents are received by smaller exporters than those received by larger and more established ones.

The Chiang Mai Initiative and Beyond

The authors assess the status of the Chiang Mai initiative, launched in May of 2000, which focuses on regional monetary and financial cooperation in East Asia. While they believe participants in the initiative will continue their dialogue, substantial progress currently appears unlikely.
