The power of regional thinking: surviving a Navy base closure

Article Abstract:

The Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA) was formed in Feb 1995 in response to the scheduled closure of the Navy base and shipyard at Charleston, SC, in 1996. A cooperative project between the local government and the business community, CRDA has attracted more than 70 companies with nearly $1.8 bil in capital investment and has created about 8,000 in new jobs since its inception. The success of CRDA has been attributed to the leadership of its 23-member board, effective communication with its constituents and its ability to foster teamwork among local businesses and organizations.

Formulating an economic development performance bonus program

Article Abstract:

Performance bonuses can be implemented in non-profit organizations such as economic development groups and produce the same results as those in profit-oriented entities. Such an incentive should be a cash reward, backed up by employment contracts, time specific, flexible and tied up with achievable and measurable goals. However, such bonuses should not be considered a panacea to organizational and personnel management problems.
