The puzzle of jobless growth in Indian manufacturing

Article Abstract:

An analysis was conducted on employment behavior in India's manufacturing sector in terms of increases in total factor productivity, in actual hours worked and in the product wage. The results indicate that neglect of hours worked leads to substantial upward bias in estimates of wage elasticity. Moreover, there seems to be an association between growth in productivity and hours and the reform process whereby the increase in hours worked reflects recovery of lost time.

Capital structure and labour demand: investigations using German micro data

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the impact of capital structure on labor demand when firms are confronted with bankruptcy. A theoretical model was developed where a company determines employment along an optimal path after factoring in financial considerations. The model was applied to an empirical analysis of data drawn from West German employers. Results indicate that, under certain conditions, capital structure does exert a negative impact on employment.

How important is foreign direct investment?

Article Abstract:

Outward and inward foreign direct investment (FDI) stocks are normally employed to measure international production or production under foreign ownership in the absence of direct measures. However, reporting FDI stocks on a historical cost basis is questionable because it fails to take into account the age distribution of stocks. This makes accurate international comparisons of FDI stocks very difficult if not impossible.
