The role of the target saving motive in guest worker migration: a theoretical study

Article Abstract:

An analysis of return migration decision is presented. The analysis considers a model of such a decision problem with uncertainty conditions. The model describes guest worker dilemma where a choice between going home to invest capital or stay in the host country to earn more money has to be made. Results show that Stopped Markovian Decision Processes provide a derivation of solutions for optimal saving and return migration strategies.

Efficiency wages, disinflation and labor mobility

Article Abstract:

The existence of a perfect labor mobility in an open economy with imperfect capital markets creates a positive effect on the economy's real exchange rate, real wages and product wages. A decrease in the devaluation rate could result to a reduced ratio of nontradables to tradables and a real appreciation. In the long term, it could also result to increased real wages and a decline of the product wage in terms of nontradables.
