The transformation of the U.S. banking industry: what a long, strange trip it's been

Article Abstract:

The US banking industry was analyzed for developments that took place from 1979-1994 to chart the future course of the industry. Regulatory changes affecting the industry were categorized as reduction in reserve requirements, expansion of bank powers, tightening of capital requirements, deregulation of deposit accounts, and relaxation of restraints on geographic diversification. The last two changes were believed to affect the industry in a more ambiguous manner.

The effects of bank mergers and acquisitions on small business lending

Article Abstract:

Bank mergers and consolidations are found to constrain small business lending, but this effect is more than offset by the reaction of other banks and by the reactions of the merging banks in some cases. The study is the first to decompose the effects of mergers into the static effects and the dynamic impact of these mergers on small business lending rates of merging banks.
