The twin challenges to Austrian banking: the environment and the East

Article Abstract:

The twin challenges confronting Austrian banks, the environment and the economic development of Eastern Europe, and the measures being adopted by the industry are discussed. The industry, whose environmental awareness is reputed, has provided loans and investments for ecological purposes with subsidies and interest rate support. In financing investments in Eastern Europe, the industry may be expected to disapprove loans on environmental grounds or to make the cost of funds for less environmentally sound projects more costly.
