The use of networks in cross border competition

Article Abstract:

The strategic networking operations of Canadian and US firms are analyzed to determine whether variations in networking practices augment or impede cross-border activities under the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement. Companies normally use networks to boost their efficiency by reducing transaction costs. They also heighten their effectiveness by acquiring strategic information. Examples of the use of networks and a framework for utilizing strategic networks are provided.

Brief case: shareholder dominance - time to ask if the emperor has any clothes

Article Abstract:

Corporate planners have traditionally aligned company goals almost exclusively to the interests of shareholders. While this policy is not altogether unjustified, other groups have to be considered since they have as much stake in the company as the original investors. Among other stakeholders are management, the employees and the buying public. Furthermore, the good of society should not be ignored even when profit-making is pursued as the primary aim of business.

Turnaround: recognizing decline and initiating intervention

Article Abstract:

The management of a financially failing firm should quickly identify the problem and initiate turnaround procedures to arrest possible business failure. Incumbent management must decide on an intermediate strategy during this critical phase before external agents impose on the firm their own short-term recovery strategies which may run counter to long-term corporate goals.
