The value of health: 1970-1990

Article Abstract:

The health condition of US citizens has remarkably improved over the years, as revealed by an analysis conducted on health capital between 1970-1990. During the period, health capital has been estimated to increase by $100,000 to $200,000 per person. Incremental changes in mortality by age were further noted, which eventually led to a greater increase in health for the elderly compared to the younger generation. Although a marked discrepancy between race and labor market changes was observed, empirical results failed to establish a direct correlation between gender differences.

Economics, values, and health care reform

Article Abstract:

Differences in values among economists hinder the development of an effective healthcare policy. Unlike the monotechnic view, the economic perspective of healthcare policy acknowledges the scarcity of healthcare resources. It also recognizes the fact that these resources can have other uses that would provide maximum benefit due to the variety in patients' wants. Finally, the economic view allows doctors to make choices based on patients' peculiar needs.
