The variation in wage rigidity by occupation and union status in the US

Article Abstract:

The research examines wage equations using data on wages disaggregated by union status and occupation for the US and derives two measures of wage rigidity, namely, unemployment effect on wages, and wage response to price inflation. The results showed an inverse relation between occupation skill level and the degree of influence on wages of an aggregate measure of employment. The study also looks at the contract model, producing a contradictory finding that union wages are more sensitive to unemployment than non-union wages.

Internal and external forces in sectoral wage formation: evidence from the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

Wage formation is analyzed based on the insider-outsider theory, which holds that insiders, or the employed, have more power in wage negotiations than outsiders, or the unemployed. The case of wage formation in the Netherlands is considered. A wage equation based on the model of S.J. Nickell and S. Wadhwani is used to analyze annual data of 18 Dutch market sectors for the period 1967-1990. Results show that external factors dominate sectoral wages.
