Theory and history behind business cycles: are the 1990s the onset of a golden age?

Article Abstract:

World economies have been affected by a number of changes such as globalization of finance, trade and production, urbanization, and the growth of the service sector. There has been a moderation in US business cycles following setbacks in the late 1970s and ear;y 1980s. Long economic expansions bring a number of benefits and also foster imbalances that cannot easily be sustained. Underconsumption and deflation can follow booms led by investment. Asian economies have been hit by problems. The US economy is different from Asian economies in some ways, but not in all ways.
