Towards one Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

The Assn of South East Asian Nations is working towards its goal to expand its membership to include all Southeast Asian countries. Significant progress has been made with the admission of Vietnam in July 1995 and the impending membership of Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. Membership expansion will provide additional benefits for ASEAN nations. However, this will also create new challenges that will require the expertise of the academic community.

ASEAN and the theory of regional economic integration: a survey

Article Abstract:

Existing approaches to regional integration and their application to the Assn of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries are analyzed. It is argued that regional integration will benefit ASEAN by maintaining macroeconomic stability, promoting investment flows, encouraging technology transfer and lowering intra-regional transaction costs. Integration will also enable ASEAN countries to cope with crises.
