Trade and growth in small states: the impact of global trade liberalization

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the vulnerability and the potential gains of small states in trade liberalization show that the structural openness, the niche export strategies and the narrow economic structures of small states present factors which can either benefit or negatively affect the economies of small states. The niche export strategy is affected by the bilateral arrangements which gave rise to the viability of the export while the narrowness of the economic structure affects the returns to scale of trading actitivities. Multilateralism can help mitigate the effects of bilateral agreements on the competitiveness of small states.

Safeguard provisions and international trade agreements involving services

Article Abstract:

International trade agreements contain safeguard provisions to protect government interests under certain circumstances. An analysis of commercial treaties, including the GATT, was carried out to determine whether such measures are necessary for the service industries. The General Agreement on Trade in Services was introduced while the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement was briefly discussed.

The Political Economy of Trade Protection: The Determinants and Welfare Impact of the 2002 US Emergency Steel Safeguard Measures

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that political expediency may have been the impetus for the US Emergency Safeguard Measures for steel, rather than justification for protection under the rules of the World Trade Organization. Costs were found to outweigh benefits in terms of employment and aggregate gross domestic product.
