Trade policy reforms in South Asia

Article Abstract:

Unilateral trade liberalization in the member nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) has been examined. SAARC is composed of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan. These countries have the least open economies in the world but have implemented trade reform programs since the 1990s. Findings of the study reveal that SAARC members still lag behind other newly-industrialized East Asian countries in the pace and extent of their economic reforms. Economic growth in the SAARC region is predicted to be satisfactory for the remainder of the 1990s.

Article Abstract:

Research on funding by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development members between 1970 and 2000 shows that the smaller donors carry a disproportionate financial burden compared to other multilateral aid participants. Factors influencing aid include size of government, budgetary balances, concern for egalitarianism, and inherent generosity.
