Trade union decline and the distribution of wages in the UK: evidence from Kernel density estimation

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the impact of unionization on wages in the UK, with emphasis on the entire wage distribution system. Nonparametric techniques were utilized to determine the influence of union decline on shifts in wage distribution over time. Results suggested that changes in the wage structure correlated with the demand for highly skilled workers. Findings also showed that the impact of unionization varied across age, education and occupation groups.

Article Abstract:

The relationship between average earnings and minimum wages in agriculture in England and Wales for the period 1948-1993 is investigated using cointegration analysis. Results indicate that such a relationship exists and that earnings Granger-cause minimum wages. The results show that the Agricultural Wages Board for England and Wales has no impact on average earnings.
