Transportation today

Article Abstract:

The freight transportation industry is being transformed by a number of developments all over the world that include changing demographics, industry and logistic practices, costs, and energy availability. These developments are changing the type, density, packaging, origin-destination patterns, and delivery requirements of freight shipped. Research is essential to understand the changing characteristics of freight. The National Council on Highway Research Programs recently granted a $500,000 contract to Cambridge Systematics to study US freight transportation demand across all modes and to develop a strategy for predicting demand.

At the crossroads

Article Abstract:

Construction of new highways contributes to economic expansion in Asia, but brings more traffic into the cities, increasing need for repair or expansion for roads that were not built for the loads they are supporting. Finding ways to keep traffic flowing while repairs are being made is a problem that requires much skill. Concrete has certain advantages over asphalt, but asphalt also has its strong points. Availability of equipment is a factor in material choice. Innovations are helping to limit the land needed for widening.
