Unemployment duration and the Restart effect: some experimental evidence

Article Abstract:

The Restart program in the UK has resulted in the reduction of unemployment duration. The program consists of interviews with long-term unemployed workers and imposes cancellation of benefits for those who refuse. The program's data indicate that placement training has minimal effects on the program's objectives while women and other generally unqualified groups opt for signing-off benefits. Despite its positive effect, the program's method is considered unethical in attaining its desired objectives.

Intergenerational mobility in Britain: evidence from unemployment patterns

Article Abstract:

An empirical study was conducted to analyze the extent to which unemployment experiences influence the likelihood of future unemployment in the UK. The unemployment histories of fathers and sons were examined. Data from the National Child Development Study was used to carry out the research. Results indicated that parental background is a critical factor of a child's future welfare despite the son's characteristics such as education, ability and family composition.
