Urban-biased policies and rising income inequality in China

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the sources and causes of rising income inequality in China. Household survey data obtained by the country's State Statistical Bureau were utilized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated that several factors contributed to the rise in income inequality in China. These include labor mobility restrictions, welfare systems and financial policies of inflation subsidies.

Low take-up in Medicaid: dose outreach matter and for whom?

Article Abstract:

The causes and consequences of low take-up in Medicaid is examined using data on Medicaid enrollment in California from 1996 to 2000. The results indicate that bilingual application assistance effectively increase enrollment among Hispanic and Asian families, who faces the greatest barrier to enrollment.

Carrots and sticks: fertility effects of China's population policies

Article Abstract:

China's population policies are assessed. A restriction on labor mobility has tended to increase fertility by keeping people in agriculture, and should be eased.
