Using a technology-based information management system to better serve business

Article Abstract:

The South Carolina Dept. of Commerce uses an information management system to better promote business in the state. The information system may be accessed by any staff member of the department via IBM compatible personal computers on every desk. An open-systems platform also allows the use of popular software packages, while immediate communication is facilitated by an electronic mail package. Information gathering, storage, access and dissemination are facilitated by a customized database that is integrated with a geographic information system.

A study determined the location, extent and regional variation of rural poverty in the United States in order to reduce the poverty level of specific regions. Regional poverty distribution is measured using the income index. Regional variation is likewise determined by principal component analysis of variation elements, modeling of poverty by OLS regression and evaluation of the poverty model by Casetti's Expansion Method.
