The UK vacuum cleaner market is buoyant. Value sales increased by 32% between 1992 and the 1997 estimated figure of 390 million pounds sterling, and by 9% between 1996 and 1997. Volume sales grew by 29% between 1992 and 1997. Upright cleaners have the biggest share of the market at 62%, and also the highest average price at 143 pounds sterling, due partly to the introduction of premium products into this segment. The market is very competitive and brand strength is low, with 80% of people citing suction power as the most important influence on purchase decisions.

The British vacuum cleaner market value increased by 15% since 1991, and valued 313 million pounds sterling in 1995. This growth follows the economic recession of the early 1990's, where volume sales were low. New designs are being developed to enhance sales figures, such as superior filtration systems and the Dyson vacuum cleaner which has no bag. Vacuum cleaner are being developed to address specific requirements, such as curtain cleaning.
