What has determined the rapid post-war growth of intra-EU trade?

Article Abstract:

Intra-European Union (EU) trade increased around 6.7 percent per annum from year 1960 to year 2000 compared with a moderate rise in trade between EU nations and the rest of the world. The various factors responsible for this phenomenal growth were studied, using the gravity model by Baier and Bergstrand and it was found that trade liberalization was a major factor responsible for the scorching pace of growth.

Article Abstract:

An empirical study into the determinants of the emerging pattern of Chinese trade intensities in the liberalization decade is reported by exploring international trade statistics for 1993 and 1999. The estimation results of four models reveal differences for export vis-a-vis import trade intensities, as well as for 1993 compared to 1999.
