Where is the ruble 'floating'?

Article Abstract:

This article examines possible economic and monetary policy of the Russian Federation since the devaluation of the ruble in late 1998. Issues concern whether or not Russia should service its foreign debts, specifically debts accumulated by the USSR; negotiating foreign loans from the IMF and Japan; improving the currency exchange rates and the reserves of the central bank; and controlling the import and export markets of Russia, with the aim of diversifying its export markets to improve the ruble's monetary exchange rate and improve the desirability of the Russia market for foreign investors.

Russian banks after the crisis

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the ways the Russian banking system has tried to survive and adapt to the conditions following the August 1998 financial crisis, including settling their relations with lenders, restoring public confidence, and restructuring and recapitalizing the banking system. Issues include taking anti-crisis steps to maintain liquidity and resolve problems with clients, restructuring and reorganizing the banking system to stimulate acquisitions and mergers and eliminate nonviable banks, and increasing bank capital and quality.

Foreign banks in Russia: hopes and reality

Article Abstract:

This article examines the role of foreign bank capital in Russia since the economic crisis of 1998 by evaluating their role in the crisis and their poistion afterwards. Issues include foreign bank service to nonresidents and to Russians, the theory that macroeconomic factors leading to the crisis may have been fueled by banking oversights and regulations, and how the Russian banking crisis has effected foreign banks.
