Youth smoking in the 1990's: why did it rise and what are the long-run implications

Article Abstract:

The number of teenagers who smoke rose in the 1990s, despite concerted anti-smoking campaign activity. Lower cigarette prices were one reason for this increase. The increase of teenage smokers will also have economic implications later as adolescent smokers age and have heath problems related to their long-term smoking habit.

Evaluating alternative approaches to incremental health-insurance expansion

Article Abstract:

The issues surrounding the criteria along which alternative approaches to incremental health-insurance expansion is evaluated. Microsimulation estimates of the impacts of three types of reforms namely tax credits for individual purchase of nongroup insurance, expansions of public insurance to children and parents, and expansion of public insurance to all adults is presented.

Social security and retirement: an international comparison

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the effects of retirement on social security participation reveals that there is a strong relationship between available benefits and social security participation across countries. The study points out that the social security practice of giving generous benefits to young retirees and penalizing labor earning beyond retirement age contribute to decreased participation.
