$25 million way to go

Article Abstract:

The Swiss biotechnology firm Novartis AG have made an agreement with the University of California, Berkeley, US, to provide funding for research work in the plant and microbiology depatrtment for five years. Some observers are concerned over the close relationship between a commercial firm and the university. Novartis will spend $25 million in return for the right to negotiate, during a 90 day period, licences on inventions. Berkeley will be able to carry out their own research and funding will be decided by a panel consisting of two members from the company and three from the university.
