A burning passion that's close to worship

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the academic debate which surrounds cult horror movie "The Wicker Man" are examined in the light of the first international Wicker Man conference, which is to be held at Glasgow University's Crichton campus. Robin Hardy, the director of the film, admits that he is surprised at the level of interest in the film, noting that it seems rather improbable that it has become the subject of academic study.

An analysis of how the devotion of academics to their jobs means that they often put up with unpleasant levels of personal discomfort. Examples include John Parker, director of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, who has become severely allergic to the plants he is researching, and whale researcher Patrick Miller who has to endure severe seasickness in order to do his research.

Students help quash robbery conviction

Article Abstract:

Staff and students at Northumbria University's Law School have helped to secure a compensation payout for Alex Allan who was wrongly convicted of robbery in 1991. The students first investigated Mr Allan's case in 2001 and managed to get the Criminal Cases Review Commission to refer the case to the Court of Appeal.
